Building self confidence through Emersonion quotes
In my school, we were instructed create something that connects to Emerson. In Beauty, the third chapter of Nature, Emerson talks about his idea of true beauty. He claims that beauty is virtue and intellect. Throughout his essay, Emerson stresses how important it is that humans experience things for themselves, before coming up with an opinion. After reading this section, I decided that I wanted to inspire girls to come up with their own definition of beauty instead of listening to the media.
At first, my partner and I came up with four different designs that went along with a quote. We were going to laser cut and then glue each design on the mirror. We decided to put bookend the designs (two on each mirror). We initially planned on laser cutting the words. Sadly, we encountered many problems with that idea.
After much thought, it was decided that we could hang our designs using binder clips and string. We ended up with two designs with four laser cut outs; two birds and two trees that would accompany two quotes.

Behind the Scenes
Idea 1:
The initial idea, was that my partner and I would make cuttable designs on illustrator, laser cut them and then use super glue to attach it to the mirror. We were going to make four different designs, two designs for each end of the two mirrors.
Problems: We were told by the school that we couldn't do that because, it is not hygienic. The wood would rot because it wouldn't be cleaned. The school thought that it would take the Janitor an insane amount of time to clean the wood every day. This problem led us to Idea 2.
Idea 2:
In order to help the janitor, we decided to put a glass screen on top of the wood. This idea was abandoned because, it would simply cost too much money to buy the glass and then install it. Also, it wouldn't look as pretty. This problem led us to Idea 3.
Idea 3:
In order to escape the glass-glue problems, we decided that we could use the two designs that were one piece. Then, we could just hang them from above the mirror. We ended up laser cutting the bird and the tree. Then we used the vinyl cutter to make quote stickers. After brainstorming this idea, we made a proposel and handed it to the school. We were approved at last!
Process
There were many problems that we faced when trying to make our final product. We had to find a creative way of attaching the laser cut desings and quotes to the mirror. Go through the slide show to visually see the process.
